The Story
Just months out of high school, an 18 year old stood alone in the middle of a boxing ring in Rome. Cassius Clay had just defeated the best light heavyweight amateur boxers in the world to become Olympic Champion.
Sports Illustrated praised his “supreme confidence” and “intricate dance steps.” Upon a meeting at the Olympic Village with Floyd Patterson, then heavyweight champion of the world, Clay had brashly proclaimed, “Hey Floyd -- someday I’m gonna whup you. Don’t you forget, I am the greatest!” The young man would keep that promise, becoming World Heavyweight Champion and knocking Patterson out twice.
On the gold medal stand that day, though, his future was still undefined. The young champ’s face reflects the feelings of an Olympic teammate: “Back then an amateur was an amateur. We weren’t fighting to form a professional career. We were fighting for pride.”
