The Story
“Do what’s inside your heart and never give up on your dreams.” That was the piece of advice, first given to him by his father, that Muhammad Ali lived by, passed along to each of his nine children, and now passes along to all in his foreword to I Shook Up the World.
Ali’s eldest daughter Maryum delivers ten knockout “rounds” telling the story of Cassius Clay and the hard work, persistence, and integrity that guided him on the path to becoming Muhammad Ali – Heavyweight Champion of the World, Olympic Gold Medalist, activist, humanitarian, and father.
Aided by Patrick Johnson’s large, colorful illustrations, Maryum (“May May”) evokes the joy of Ali’s fans, paints the fear and awe his opponents felt, and uses Ali’s trademark rhyming throughout to communicate the essence of the larger than life figure in a way that is fun and easy for children.
A foreword written by Muhammad Ali himself, author’s note, and timeline of Ali’s life make for the perfect introduction to one of the 20th century’s most beloved and valuable cultural icons, who has proven time and time again that there is no limit to what one person can achieve so long as you never give up.
