The Story
In 1974 Ali was down, but was he out? He had lost his heavyweight crown during the “Exile” years, lost a major comeback bout to arch-rival Joe Frazier, and just a year before broken his jaw losing to Ken Norton.
It was far from certain that Ali could ever regain his title when promoter Don King organized “The Rumble in the Jungle.” Ali would fight then World Heavyweight Champion George Foreman. Foreman had never lost a fight -- his last eight opponents had not lasted more than 6 minutes.
Ali was older, smaller and a heavy underdog.
Foreman was reclusive in Africa, but Ali was inspired and went out and made himself popular among the people of Zaire. 60,000 of them showed up to watch the two Americans fight at a soccer stadium at 4 AM, an accommodation to US television.
Expected to dance, Ali instead lay against the ropes, taking relentless punishment from Foreman. Even Ali’s corner was stunned, but Muhammad had a plan – “Rope-a-Dope.”
By the eighth round, Foreman was worn down from fighting in the sweltering heat. Ali connected with vicious combinations in the 8th round. He KO’ed Foreman, regained the title, and shocked the world. Again.
