The Story
1974. Ali had not been World Champion for 7 years. In his most important comeback bouts, he had lost to both Joe Frazier and Ken Norton, who had broken Ali’s jaw.
The Rumble in the Jungle, promoted by Don King, pitted Ali against the current heavyweight champion. George Foreman was younger, bigger, and had never lost a fight. He had knocked out 37 of his former 40 opponents, his last 8 fights lasting less than 2 rounds. Ali was a major underdog.
Everyone expected Ali’s usual dancing style. But in the first round he came out swinging, then sat back against the ropes for seven rounds, letting Foreman swing and exhaust himself in the sweltering African heat.
Ali’s new invention, the “Rope-A-Dope,” worked. In Round 8, Ali lashed out with devastating combinations. Ali KO’ed Foreman, shocked the world, and regained the heavyweight crown.
