The Story
Cassius Clay traveled to the 1960 Olympics in Rome as America’s best prospect for a gold medal. In a foreshadowing of his becoming a global citizen, Clay befriended athletes and visitors from hundreds of countries around the world.
But he was not in Rome to make friends.
Clay beat Belgian Yvon Becaus, inside two rounds. His second bout went the full three rounds but Clay earned the unanimous decision over the more experienced Russian, Gennadiy Shatkov.
Australian Tony Madigan was up next. Madigan had defeated Clay in the 1958 Tournament of Champions. This time, Cassius Clay was victorious by decision.
Ziggy Pietrzykowski of Poland was Clay’s opponent in the gold medal bout. After a difficult opening round, Clay put on a proud display of speed, strength and strategy that earned him the gold medal.
The photo captures a young champion in training, before the pressures that were to come in the next few decades. The words of an Olympic teammate sum it up: “Back then an amateur was an amateur. We weren’t fighting to form a professional career. We were fighting for pride.”
