The Story
In 1962 Muhammad Ali told the New York Times that he wasn’t “the greatest.” He described himself as “the double greatest.” Of course, Muhammad’s confidence extended outside the ring, as well.
When asked about his golf game, Muhammad replied "I'm the best. I just haven't played yet."
He was brash and bold for the rest of us. When his fans were concerned about the outcome of one of his fights, he reassured us. We didn’t want him to lose. Or get hurt. Or have that pretty face get messed up. If he was worried or in any kind of doubt, he certainly didn’t show it.
He wasn’t just going to “knock ‘em out.” He was going to “pick the round.” That’s what it takes to be “the double greatest.”
